Margo Onnes

In her video works, Margo Onnes investigates structures of storytelling. It concerns sagas, symbols, old movies and the effect of the MacGuffin; the Hitchcock’s ‘guilty object’ in mobilising or suggesting story lines. She deals with questions such as: what is the difference between a freeze frame and a moving image in terms of narratology? What is a film image without a narrative? Or: What happens if we can’t find the storyteller in a film?
In large scale video installations Onnes creates spirals of narrative in which the spectator is forced to actively engage both physically - by passing through and seeing the various projections - and mentally - as the multiple images and spoken words prevent a single linear interpretation.

Margo Onnes completed her Bachelor Fine Arts in 2005 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, and her Master Fine Art at the Piet Zwart Institute in 2008. She is an artist based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
